MOURNING OUR OWN, YET AGAIN
The International Union of Police Associations, (I.U.P.A.) joins everyone throughout the country who wears the badge in mourning the loss of two more brothers. Sergeant Anthony Beminio of the Des Moines Police Department and Officer Justin Martin of the Urbandale Police Department were ambushed and murdered while sitting in their patrol cars.
The I.U.P.A. is concerned about the safety of our brothers and sisters, especially in light of events since Baton Rouge and Dallas as well as the continuing assaults on law personnel. The FBI data on officer assaults revealed that 48,315 assaults occurred against law enforcement officers in 2014, resulting in 13,654 officers receiving an injury requiring medical treatment. While this is an unfortunate, but too often a tragic aspect of the job, in recent years, beginning with the ambush murders of officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge, these vicious attacks are on the rise.
The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund has stated that ambush killings of unsuspecting law enforcement officers is the leading circumstance of the firearms-related fatalities, with 14 thus far in 2016—spiking more than 300 percent over the prior year There have already been 14 “ambush killings of unsuspecting law enforcement officers” in 2016, compared with three in the same time period the previous year.
